The Dizzy Sheep Daily Dizzy Deal
What is this dizzy deal thing?
United Blanket of Change Participation

January 31 - 10:30am EST

Just received our first square today (January 30)!

Square 01

"Dreamcatcher" - created by Peggy J from Arizona

A few more people have signed up and a few less states are on the list below!

Dizzy is still working on the uncomitted states!

--------------

Hey folks!

It's your favorite fortune telling sheep, Merlino Woolio here.  Using my magical crystal-cashmere ball, I have live, up to date details on state participation for the United Blanket of Change!  Well, I suppose up to date is a relative term - it only spits out new information every couple of hours...  so check back a bit later for updates!

Anyway, we're still hoping to get participation from every state!  I'll be sending telepathic messages to people in the following states, urging them to find their way to Dizzy Sheep (and to send me cookies)

You can still participate - send us an email at UBoC@DizzySheep.com

You are welcomed and encouraged to participate even if your state already has someone doing a square.

See details of the project at the end of this Blaaag.

States we haven't heard from yet:

Alaska
Arkansas
Delaware
Hawaii
Iowa
Idaho
Kentucky
Michigan
Mississippi
Montana
North Dakota
Nevada
Oklahoma
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Vermont
West Virginia

Yes - we are working on international shipping - send us an email at UBoC@DizzySheep.com

United Blanket of Change project:

Your $10 payment covers shipping for the yarn and for the return of the completed square - we provide the yarn at no additional charge.

Have a group that wants to make multiple squares - send an email to  UBoC@DizzySheep.com .

For each kit ordered, you will receive:

  • One free skein of Austermann Bombolo
  • A pre-paid and addressed Priority MailTM envelope to return your completed square
  • General guidelines for the completed square
  • A form to provide an optional acknowledgment and/or dedication for your square
  • A photograph of the completed blanket via email

All completed squares must be dropped in the mail by March 2, 2009.

Dizzy will combine the squares into a very large, probably wall size blanket.

The completed blanket will be sent to President Obama along with a document containing all the acknowledgements / dedications.

General guidelines:

  • Each square should be 10" x 10"
  • Any design - perhaps something inspiring, important or symbolic to you
  • One skein will make a square, but you can add other yarns, beads, etc
  • Please nothing that would be generally considered offensive
  • Yes - crocheting is perfectly acceptable (Dizzy considers crocheting: knitting using a hook :-)

We are trying for participation from all 50 states and we know that the wonderful online community of knitters will "needle" a friend or relative to participate.

I'm wondering the same thing. I've ripped out 4 already! I'm just not used to doing squares with such bulky yarn!

I'm crocheting and I finally figured something out! I'm doing a modified Waldo's Puzzle which has a center of four interlocking rings of the bombola and I will frame with a worsted weight in navy and possibly white or red and then embroider words on the rings and maybe around the edging.

That sounds nice! I'm glad you are able to find something to crochet.

I'm working on modifying a wheat cable pattern from either a jacket or a scarf but I'm afraid with the bulky yarn I will loose the definition. I had wanted to do a sunflower as I am from Kansas but that isn't working out at all. Maybe some beads will help with the definition. The first block turned in is lovely.

I'm actually really glad for the bulky yarn because it has made me really stretch my imagination. I hope this really gets to them. I've heard you can't send things to them. But maybe through the White House Society you could get it there. Regardless, I like doing it, I like the symbolism and it has made me, as a beginner, really stretch.

Or maybe you can get it there through a Senator or Congressman...?

I just got my yarn in the mail yesterday...I'm so excited! I'm thinking of perhaps doing some sort of textured square. I found a stitch pattern on-line called a "Harris Tweed" which looks like it might work for this yarn.
