Fred and I were watching the Super Bowl - surrounded by all sorts of wonderful snacks.

The game was exciting - my story was on the coffee table.

Well Fred got so caught up in the excitement of the moment that instead of grabbing a Buffalo chicken wing, he grabbed my story.

Before I could point out his error, he ate my story!

On a positive note, it must have been a great story - Fred thought it was very tasty.

My Trip to the Dentist

I wasn't a bit nervous about my recent dental trip thanks to Kamaor's encouraging Blaaag and my experience back in October of 2010 . She took me to work, to a dentist's office:

I was excited to go to work with Kamaor and help her set up for a patient. Just look at all of those neat tools! And of course, there's the classic blueish green drooly bib.

The patient ended up running late, so I was lucky and had my teeth checked. After my fear of the veterinarian office, you might think I'd also be afraid of the dentist. I practice good oral hygiene though and have never had a single cavity.

I started eying the very fun looking dentist drill which made everyone very nervous, so I was taken back to the lab to see the creation of teeth.

I asked if I could have a few extra teeth installed, you know, for extra chewing power, but I don't think anyone took me seriously.

Who wouldn't want more chewing power??

Thanks to my dentist my tooth is all better now!

Endodontics

Well a visit to my friendly endodontic specialist took care of my toothache.

My tooth was really painful before I went.

I've always been asked to relate pain on a scale of 1 to 10.

But here is the Dizzy Pain Scale that I personally use:

Before my dental visit I was at an 8.5 on the Dizzy Pain Scale.

I'm happy today because I have a new lunchbox. Dizzy gave it to me and claims it's a gift for all of the lunches he stole, but I have a feeling it's really from a kind individual and a certain package.

Of course now that I have this fabulous lunchbox, I don't know where Dizzy will get the brown paper bags for Bags of Knit. So you all might be out of luck there.

I'm also going to add a little extra security to protect my lunches, in the form of 20,000 volts. That's right, when I'm done, if that bottomless stomached sheep comes within 5 feet of this thing, that fuzzy white wool coat will be a charred smoking frizzy mess!

So thank you mysterious package sender, I love it!

Harder Than I Thought

But it’s hard to paint the yarn with those little brushes and not splatter some in the process.

Saint Distaff Day

Saint Distaff Day, but there is no Saint Distaff! So why was this mythical saint created?

It seems that no one was doing much work during the twelve days after Christmas, but now it was time to get back to it - at least for the women. It seems that the men got to wait until Plough Monday – go figure.

So here you have some coming off holiday, and some still with free time, so naturally the day ended up with everyone getting involved with pranks – what else! I mean boys will be boys and girls will be girls! And we won't mention gargoyles!

So how to legitimize all this – having one more day of fun and play? Make up a saint of course! I mean who can argue with Saint Distaff Day?

Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Distaff – tool or symbol

The image above me shows a distaff holding un-spun fibers while spinning.

Back in the day this tool was so closely related to the work of women that it also became an adjective for the female side of a family and even a noun for a woman.

So there you have it – both tool and symbol!

Using a distaff and a drop spindle as shown, it could take a week to spin a pound of woolen yarn and several weeks to spin a heavy cotton.

You spinners were certainly ambitious, dedicated, dyed-in-the-wool folks!

Too much work for me!

Oh, and the distaff is also called the roc, so there you have it - Roc Day!

Yesterday we featured drop spindles and I’m happy to report that there was no repeat of last year’s incident.

As you may recall from last year:

Remember your mother telling you to never run with scissors in your hand? Well father Fred wants to add the following sage advice: never walk into a door with the pointy part of your drop spindle pointing towards you. I am happy to say that said Dizzy crew member did not suffer any notable injuries or require a trip to the hospital emergency room.

And let’s start celebrating Rock Day – it’s all about me, Fred “The Rock” Gargoyle.

What’s that Dizzy? It’s Roc Day and it’s not about me? Well!

Yes, I know – we’ve done this before. In fact this year we aren’t a day late - like last year!

Today, January 7th, is also known as Saint Distaff Day – even though he never existed. But it makes sense – what sounds better asking your boss: “I need to take off Roc Day for fun and pranks” or “I need to take off Saint Distaff Day for religious reasons”?

We’ll have more discussion on the history of Roc Day, but let’s talk about today and the next eight days!

That’s right! Spinners deserve more one day of fun – so about 2 weekends with 5 week days in between! That’s right .642857 of a fortnight!

And we’re doing something new.

Today we’ll have drop spindles all day, but tomorrow we'll have a normal deal from midnight to 6 PM EST and then we’ll have an additional spinner’s deal for the rest of the day!

I thought this yarn was from a baby alpaca, but it’s wool roving braided into, well, an airy, light feeling!

And it’s super bulky – so it’s a super-fast knit.

Bizzy recommended for that special warm and soft project.
